Next Stop: Mapping My Digital Space
When was the last time you sat down and went through all of the applications on your phone or computer? The websites you frequently visit? Truly thought of what technology you are using on a regular basis and for what purpose? I did yesterday and truly cannot stop thinking about it.
| Source for Images: Google I wont lie - there are plenty of other apps on my phone that are rarely used but still live on there "just in case." But these are the TOP 50 apps, programs, and websites are the ones that I frequent most often. ↠LETS BREAK IT DOWN⇩
I am a numbers gal so it only seems right for me to break it down to the numbers:
36% of the technology I frequently use allows me to be creative.
Being creative is important to me. It is something that drives me, keeps my mind going, and allows me to continuously problem-solve. I secretly enjoy when I come across stumbling blocks that pushes me to try new angles or perspectives.
Even more so, the majority of the 46% lays in my "Professional and Resident" quadrant. This tells me that I e-n-j-o-y (๐ฒ) taking risks at work, ignoring doubt, and facing my fear of falling short. It tells me that work to me is creative and engaging and that being a "resident" on those programs connects me to them.
While currently on the "visitor" side of the quadrant, Otus is one that will soon be crossing the line into Resident. Otus is an assessment and data management system that our district is currently using. Although I currently use it most often to analyze data, I have created assessments for all grade levels through the system and will continue to do so. I am hoping that I can find out more about all of the aspects so that I can be more creative with it.

50% of the technology I frequently use is for communication purposes
Communication ๐ I value communication. It allows me to see the big picture, know where others are coming from, and empathize. If anything, I probably overly communicate. Ha!
The majority of my communication is given and received through e-mail. I check my work e-mail the most at a rate of almost once an hour when possible. It is the first thing I check when I wake up and the last thing I look at before I go to bed. I (sadly) rarely check my two personal e-mail accounts. I feel as though most of the time those accounts are filled with spam e-mail or requests to access items on my Google Drive.
My next most popular form is through text messaging as I receive approximately 75 text messages a day, mostly from my family. I find it incredibly difficult to delete the text messages as I feel as though it is losing points of reference that I can use at any time. 29.89GB of my phone storage is in text messages with my oldest saved message that I could access without spending too much time digging coming from October 2011. That text message is from a dear friend of mine who passed away from cancer not long afterwards. I cherish that message.

Whether it is shopping on Amazon or watching television through Playstation Vue, only 12 of what I frequent the most are ways for me to spend money... I wont play the numbers game in how much money I actually spend while using any said applications ๐.

When it comes to the weekend, I am (almost) all hands on personal and not on professional.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
And just when I start getting down on myself for how much I use technology throughout the day and am not "living in the moment," I realize that in each website, application, and program:
↠Learning occurs 100% of the time ↞
I use each and every one of the technology resources to further my understanding and knowledge. No matter if it is on a personal or professional realm, and not matter if I am a resident or a visitor to it, I am gathering as much as I possibly can from it. So it is all worth it... right? ๐

Wow- Karyn- this is a fantastic blog post! I love the way you broke down your quadrants and gave us numbers to chew on. It's such a great idea to stop and reflect on something like this. Being cognizant makes it that much easier for us to decide how much time we want to be a visitor vs a resident. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteI love how you broke down the uses of the top 50 technology sites you use. It is so interesting to see the purpose behind the different apps and technology you use. I like how you don’t use much technology for work on the weekend. I joke about needing a weekend off from work and I think that it is important to take time off from work on the weekends. Since you think that you are learning from all the technology you use, do you now want to make changes to what apps you are using and how often you use them?
ReplyDeleteLove the creativity recognition that you mentioned, and would definitely agree based on what I've seen myself. There's a myriad of skills necessary to be a good coach like you, but having these digital tools and using them creatively certainly helps play a role in why you're such a great instructional coach. What I am left wondering after looking at your quadrants is what a couple of them are. There seem to be a few that I didn't recognize or wasn't familiar with, so I will have to follow up with you on those so I can see how they might be able to help me too.
